IP rating Explained, IP65, IP68, IP55, IPX8
The IP (Ingress Protection) ratings are a standard set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to classify the degree of protection provided by enclosures for electronic devices against the intrusion of foreign objects (like dust) and moisture. The IP rating is usually expressed as "IP" followed by two digits. Here's what each digit means:
1. **IP68:**
- The first digit (6) refers to dust protection. In this case, it means the device is dust-tight. No ingress of dust is allowed.
- The second digit (8) refers to water resistance. A rating of 8 indicates that the device is protected against continuous immersion in water under conditions specified by the manufacturer. The depth and duration are specified by the manufacturer.
2. **IPX8:**
- The "X" in the IPX8 indicates that the device has not been rated for dust protection. The absence of a digit means it hasn't been tested or rated for dust resistance.
- The second digit (8) is the same as in IP68, indicating protection against continuous immersion in water under conditions specified by the manufacturer.
3. **IP54:**
- The first digit (5) indicates that the device is protected against dust, but it's not entirely dust-tight. Some dust may enter the device, but it should not interfere with its normal operation.
- The second digit (4) refers to water resistance. A rating of 4 means protection against water splashes from any direction.
4. **IP55:**
- The first digit (5) is the same as in IP54, meaning the device is protected against dust but not entirely dust-tight.
- The second digit (5) indicates protection against low-pressure water jets from any direction.
5. **IP65:**
- The first digit (6) indicates that the device is dust-tight. No ingress of dust is allowed.
- The second digit (5) means protection against water jets. The device is protected against water jets projected by a nozzle from any direction.
In summary:
- IP68 is dust-tight and can be continuously immersed in water.
- IPX8 is not rated for dust protection but can be continuously immersed in water.
- IP54 offers some protection against dust and water splashes.
- IP55 offers some protection against dust and low-pressure water jets.
- IP65 is dust-tight and protected against water jets.
